About Italia Trulli

A Trullo (plural trulli) is a limestone historical dwelling that dates back as early as the mid-14th century.  It is a structure characteristically featuring pyramidal, domed or conical roofs constructed without mortar which was once used as home for peasant farmers. 

The trulli dwellings are typical of the Puglia region especially in the towns of Valle d’Itria, where you will find the charming towns of Alberobello, Ceglie Messapica, Cisternino, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Monopoli, and last but not least, the beautiful Ostuni—La Citta` Bianca.

The Italia Trulli property which was acquired by the De Francesca family in 1980. With 10,000 square meters of land, it includes seven independent accommodations immersed in the lush countryside of Ostuni.  It is home to century old olives trees, oak trees, almonds, figs, apricots, plums, and prickly pear fruit trees.  Many aromatic plants such as capers, oregano, marjoram, thyme, rosemary, myrtle, asparagus, flowering plants, and shrubs native to the Mediterranean grow wildly among the rocky terrain of the property.

Situated in a peaceful location on a hilltop of Contrada Badessa in Ostuni, At about 300mt. high in Ostuni in a panoramic position with a breathtaking view of the valley below, As well as the beautiful fortified city of Ceglie Messapica on a clear day.  Its location is 9.4 km/5.84 miles or 17 minute drive to Ostuni Centro Storico and from there the nearest beach is only 8 km/5 miles away.

According to the former owners, who were already in their nineties, the original trullo on the property was built at the end of the 1700s.  At the time of acquisition, the trullo had already suffered partial collapse and needed to be restored.  The restoration of the trullo (currently named Trullo Carrubo) was completed in 1990 to integrate modern-day comforts while preserving its unique character and architectural elements by using traditional materials and local limestones from the surrounding areas.

Several years later in 1995, other adjacent land was purchased that brought the property to its current total of 15,000 square meters to date.  In 1995, the reconstruction of the Lamia started with its expansion to the current three-room trullo named Trullo Fichi d’India.  In the following years, Casetta Mandorlo was built as a three-room cottage followed by Casa Rosmarino as a two-room cottage.  Lastly, Casetta Mirto—a studio apartment was built in 2005.

Within the property, there is plenty of space for gathering and privacy for small or large families or a group of friends up to 20 people.  It is not allowed to organize parties or events in the property without a strict permission from the owner.
